From Atoms to Materials

Extension Different reactivity in a group We have learnt that elements in the same group tend to have similar chemical properties. Do they have the same reactivity? The following experiment will give you some ideas about this. D 13.3B Comparing the reactivity of elements in the same group (Demo) Experimentt Caution • Magnesium granules and calcium granules are flammable. Keep them away from fire. • Dilute hydrochloric acid is irritant. magnesium granule (about 0.1 g) 1 flammable calcium granule (about 0.1 g) 1 flammable dilute hydrochloric acid 1 bottle irritant suction flasks (250 cm 3 ) 2 syringes (100 cm 3 ) with rubber tubing 2 measuring cylinder (100 cm 3 ) 1 rubber stoppers 2 forceps 1 pair stopwatch 1 Materials and ap p a r a t u s Connect a suction flask to the rubber tubing of a syringe as shown. 1 Measure 100 cm 3 of dilute hydrochloric acid using a measuring cylinder. Pour it into the suction flask. 3 Set the plunger of the syringe to the zero mark. 2 Wear safety goggles.
