From Atoms to Materials

Extension Language tip For these simple ions, note that: •  positive ions have the same name as the atoms they form from; •  the names of these negative ions end in -ide . • When an atom loses electron(s), it carries a net positive charge and forms a positive ion (a cation). • When an atom gains electron(s), it carries a net negative charge and forms a negative ion (an anion). Some examples of simple ions are listed below. atom (electrically neutral) positive ion negative ion loses electron(s) gains electron(s) Name of ion Symbol Hydrogen ion H + Sodium ion Na + Potassium ion K + Magnesium ion Mg 2+ Zinc ion Zn 2+ Aluminium ion Al 3+ Name of ion Symbol Fluoride ion F − Chloride ion Cl − Bromide ion Br − Iodide ion I − Oxide ion O 2− Sulphide ion S 2− Positive ions: Negative ions: Table 13.6 Some common simple ions 27 13 From Atoms to Materials © United Prime Educational Publishing (HK) Limited 2024 All rights reserved; no part of this publication may be reproduced, photocopied, recorded or otherwise, without the prior written permission of the Publisher.
