Non-ionizing Medical Imaging 2 Checkpoint 7 82 1. There are two kinds of bundles in an endoscope. The incoherent bundle is used for illumination while the coherent bundle is used for transmitting images. 2. Which of the following diagrams better represents the image as viewed from one end of an endoscope? A. B. 3. The following bundles have the same diameter. A. B. C. B (a) Which one gives the highest resolution? (b) Which one can bend the least? 4. True or false: (a) For each optical fibre in an incoherent bundle, the core has a smaller refractive index than the cladding. (b) An incoherent bundle rather than a coherent one is used for illumination because it can transmit light with a smaller energy loss. (c) Endoscopy is invasive, though minimally. (d) An endoscope can also be used in surgery apart from medical imaging. 5. (a) Theoretically, in a coherent bundle, light rays entering two individual fibres at the same time may not exit at the same time. Why? (b) Does it affect the images obtained using endoscope in practice? Why? C A F F T T No Snapshot Technology Capsule endoscopy Capsule endoscopy is a way to take images of the digestive tract (消化道) . The capsule, which weighs a few grams and is about 20 to 30 mm long, contains a small camera and a few LEDs. After it is swallowed by a patient, the capsule can take about 50 000 images over 8 hours and send them back to the doctor through Bluetooth (a wireless technology).
