Endoscopy 81 2.3 Snapshot Technology Advantages An endoscopy has several advantages. • It allows the doctor to inspect the inner surfaces along the tubes of the body, such as the trachea to the lungs or the oesophagus into the stomach, through natural openings in the body. • No ionizing radiation is used. • It can be used in keyhole surgery to speed up the recovery time because only small cuts are made on the patient’s body. • Small tissue samples can be taken out from the body through an endoscope. Limitations and precautions However, an endoscopy has the following limitations and some safety precautions must be taken. • It requires anaesthesia （麻醉） . • It may require fasting （禁食） to empty the organs that are going to be examined. • Its field of view is relatively narrow, i.e. only a small area can be seen at one time. • It can only be used for viewing the inner surface of an organ with cavity. • It is invasive, though minimal. • In rare cases, it can cause internal bleeding or an allergic reaction in the patient.
